Can we trust WHO after the swine flu?

MEDICAL MATTERS: H1N1 has further tainted WHO’s credibility

ALTHOUGH the secretary general of the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan, declared an end to the H1N1 pandemic in August, the fallout continues. Inquiries are ongoing into whether the WHO response was excessive and whether there were ethically questionable links between WHO experts and pharmaceutical companies manufacturing the vaccine.

The Pandemic That Wasn't

The H1N1 swine flu outbreak appears to have ended less like the rogue wild boar that United Nations bureaucrats predicted and more like roasted pork tenderloin with apples and sage. From the beginning the World Health Organization's actions have ranged from the dubious to the flagrantly incompetent.

UK: Health watchdogs have admitted for the first time that there may be a possible link between the swine flu jab and an increased risk of developing a rare nerve disease.

Experts are carrying out studies to examine a possible association between the vaccine and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a condition which attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis and even death.

The authorities have always denied any link although it had been suggested a previous swine flu vaccine had caused cases of the disease in America in the 1970s.

Now the Medicines and Health care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published a report that suggests that further tests are to be carried out.

It reads: "Given the uncertainties in the available information and as with seasonal flu vaccines, a slightly elevated risk of GBS following H1N1 vaccines cannot be ruled out.

USA TODAY/Consumer Reports: Fewer plan to get flu shots this year

Only a year after the swine flu pandemic led Americans to line up for flu shots, many people are now spurning vaccines, two studies suggest.

Only 37% of people plan to definitely get vaccinated this year, a Consumer Reports survey shows. About 30% say they definitely won't get a shot, while 31% of respondents are undecided, the survey of 1,500 says.

Australia: H1N1 shot that led to fits is re-approved for use

The Health Department gave the drug companies the go-ahead to make more of the controversial vaccine.

The department's Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee has approved a repeat production of the cocktail of swine flu and two seasonal flu strains for the next Australian winter.

Health authorities are still investigating why the world-first, three-in-one vaccine induced febrile convulsions at nine times the normal rate before it was suspended in April for use in children younger than five.

Australia: Cause of vaccine convulsions remains a mystery

The TGA said an investigation led by Nobel laureate Peter Doherty had not found a conclusive cause of the convulsions.

But the "current working hypothesis" was that the strain of swine flu used in this year's seasonal flu vaccine appeared to contain a higher than usual level of a protein called neuraminidase.

"Excess neuraminidase enzyme activity may be pyrogenic (producing fever) and may thus be contributing to the increase in febrile reactions in young children receiving the vaccine for the first time," the TGA said.

Was swine flu ever a real threat?

"It looks like the WHO is under the influence of industry," Dr Wolfgang Wodarg told a hearing in Strasbourg. "It was stated in panic-stricken terms that this was a flu that could threaten humanity. This is why billions of medications were bought."

"....Exhibit number one, says Dr Wodarg, is the WHO's decision to soften its definition of a pandemic last April, shortly before the emergence of the H1N1 virus. By eliminating the requirement that influenza pandemics should cause "enormous morbidity and death", the WHO provoked an unnecessary "scare" that conveniently triggered the activation of "sleeping" contracts with vaccine manufacturers...."

One small needle, a world of trouble

"Downstairs in the rehab wing of Markham Stouffville hospital, in a private room with a sunny window, lies Donna Hartlen, a young mother who is now partially paralyzed....."

"She blames the H1N1 flu shot she received on Dec. 13 - two weeks before her symptoms suddenly appeared.

Of course, there is no way to know for certain. But Hartlen has only grown more convinced since chatting by chance in the hall with the older gentleman from the hospital room next door.

Don Gibson has GBS as well, with legs so numb now that he is confined to a wheelchair. It turns out that not only was he also vaccinated against H1N1, but he got the shot just two days before Hartlen, in the very same Markham doctors’ office..."

Moreno Valley woman believes daughter suffered severe reaction to swine flu vaccine

Maria Garcia, of Moreno Valley, said doctors told her they may never be able to confirm that her 8-year-old daughter, Anahi, suffered a severe adverse reaction to a swine flu vaccine. The third-grader is recovering from extreme leg pain that she began suffering about four days after she and her older sister received swine flu vaccinations Nov. 3.

Anahi was healthy before she got vaccinated, her mother said. The pain became so severe that Anahi couldn't walk and was hospitalized, Garcia said. A physical therapist has been helping the child, who returned to school this week, her mother said.

Article from THE ATLANTIC magazine : Does the Vaccine Matter?

"...The history of flu vaccination suggests other reasons to doubt claims that it dramatically reduces mortality. In 2004, for example, vaccine production fell behind, causing a 40 percent drop in immunization rates. Yet mortality did not rise. In addition, vaccine “mismatches” occurred in 1968 and 1997: in both years, the vaccine that had been produced in the summer protected against one set of viruses, but come winter, a different set was circulating. In effect, nobody was vaccinated. Yet death rates from all causes, including flu and the various illnesses it can exacerbate, did not budge. Sumit Majumdar, a physician and researcher at the University of Alberta, in Canada, offers another historical observation: rising rates of vaccination of the elderly over the past two decades have not coincided with a lower overall mortality rate. In 1989, only 15 percent of people over age 65 in the U.S. and Canada were vaccinated against flu. Today, more than 65 percent are immunized. Yet death rates among the elderly during flu season have increased rather than decreased..."

From Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons: Influenza Vaccine: Review of Effectiveness of the U.S. Immunization Program"The results of the present study appear to be similar to those
obtained by the CDC in a recent analysis of the population efficacy
of the 2003-2004 influenza vaccine. The CDC determined that
immunization with the 2003-2004 influenza vaccine offered
negligible population protection against developing influenza-like
illnesses, and that in some of their methods of analysis there were
results, which, though not significant at the 95% confidence level,
indicated that influenza vaccination was associated with an
increased risk of developing influenza-like illnesses."

LONG ISLAND: State probes unexplained death of Kings Park boy, 8 - one week after receiving the seasonal flu vaccine

The unexplained death of an 8-year-old Kings Park boy at Stony Brook University Medical Center has sparked a state Department of Health probe, authorities said Wednesday. The boy -- identified as Sean Weisse by a family member -- was taken off life support Sunday, three days after being hospitalized with symptoms of fever, nausea and a sore throat, said Claudia Hutton, a health department spokeswoman.

Health authorities sought to assure the public that Sean did not die from a reaction to a flu vaccine shot last week.

Hutton said the boy was given a regular seasonal flu shot in a private physician's office, but results from blood and spinal fluid tests show that it is "extremely unlikely" that the vaccination caused his illness later
